Hi everyone :)
Should Christians wait on God or take initiative?
I've heard this question asked a bit lately. And often concerned with the justification of Christians doing online dating. One response I've heard is that of course you have to do both because both are in the Bible. A common Bible story used is Ruth. Ruth (I've heard) is proof of taking initiative and it shows that you can choose to do outlandish and scandalous things (after all Ruth was quite scandalous since she lay at the feet of a man) and therefore a Christian can go and do online dating.
But think this comparison is incorrect.
It is also incorrect to have an attitude of "forget about waiting on God" because we have to take initiative. Actually it is the opposite.
We have to wait on God.
But that doesn't mean we are doing nothing. When we wait on God for everything then there are two periods of time: firstly a being still and listening time and secondly a being active time. Both of these times are showing obedience to God because you are always praying and always waiting on God. Here are some awesome Bible verses about waiting on God.
"but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. "
Isaiah 40:31 (AKJV)
"Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord."
Psalm 27:14 (AKJV)
"The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace."
Exodus 14:14 (AKJV)
"And therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the Lord is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him "
Isaiah 30:18 (AKJV)
As I say in the video, Ruth did not just suddenly do an outlandish thing. She had gotten to know Boaz and seen his character over time. Plus she had Naomi's blessing and had done acts of obedience that finally led to that opportunity.
I believe that God is able to bring two people together when those two people do their acts of obedience that God wants them to do. If you try to be the instigator of your romance instead of God then I believe that you won't have God's best for your life (and you waste time in the process).
For those that have done things on their own and found a Christian via online dating apps, then if they can refocus on God and start to be led by him in their endeavours then their marriage will have more likelihood of success. As I say on the vlog, there are times when God could actually tell someone they are to go on an online dating site. But if he does he would probably have you on there for something other than to find your new husband or wife.
As for me, I'm waiting on God. I know he has the best for me. I will trust him.
