Hi everyone :)
Is gambling a sin? The bible doesn't actually say it in those exact words but there are many verses that indicate that gambling is a sin. When someone gambles they are giving in to lust.
"We also all once lived among them in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest." Ephesians 2:3 (World English Bible).
This is the way an unbeliever is, doing the desires of the flesh. Once Jesus is our Lord then we must not give in to lust.
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them." Ephesians 2:10 (World English Bible).
So once we belong to Jesus then we are to do good works. That means that he will help us to change the things that we used to do that were sinful (e.g. gambling) and give us new things to do. He will also give us security because he is with us.
"Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5 (World English Bible).
God doesn’t ever leave us! That is such good news! Plus he gives us security because he knows what we need.
“Therefore don’t be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘With what will we be clothed?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient. " Matthew 6:31-34 (World English Bible).
Any good thing we will actually have is through God. And if we seek him continually then we won't miss out on any good thing (so we won't suffer from lack).
"The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger, but those who seek Yahweh shall not lack any good thing." Psalm 34:10 (World English Bible).
So it is my recommendation that people:
Give their lives to God
Trust God for their provision
Continually seek God (because then he will show you what to do and what not to do and give you the strength to overcome and not be addicted to any worldly thing).
Gambling, addictions, lusts of the flesh and lusts of the mind are all things that God does not want us doing. When we do anything (yes everything and anything we do) it is supposed to be something that God wants us to do. But also when someone is gambling then they are craving money or hoping for that monetary prize. They are putting their trust or hope in money. Yes we can use money but we shouldn't put our hope in it or crave it. Gambling is a lust of the flesh and lust of the mind (it uses a person's body and mind to do something that God does not want them to do).
This and other addictions can be broken in Jesus' name. His blood (through dying on the cross) paid the price for the curse of sin to be broken. He has made us clean. Through God (and seeking him) we can find the good works that he wants us to do and then we won't have time to do other things (that are bad for us like gambling) and we won't even have the desire any more.
Jesus didn't just save our souls from hell, he has given us freedom from addictions and lusts. He will show us what things he wants us to do and help us get them done.
Here is a prayer of deliverance from addiction and lust:
Dear Father God,
I repent from my sins and from addictions and lusts. I ask for deliverance from these things in Jesus' name. By the blood of the Lord Jesus, who is my Lord, I declare addictions and lusts broken off my life in Jesus' name. God help me every day. Amen!
